# What Sell-Through Rate Actually Tells You (and the Number Most Stores Get Wrong)

Sell-through rate is simple to calculate and easy to misread. What it really signals about buying and pricing, and how to track it across your catalogue.

Sell-through rate is one of the easiest inventory metrics to calculate and one of the easiest to misread. Most stores either ignore it or look at a single number that quietly tells them the wrong thing. Used properly, it is one of the clearest signals you have for what to reorder, what to discount, and what to stop buying.

## What sell-through rate is

Sell-through rate is the percentage of a product you sold out of what you had available, over a defined period:

**Sell-through rate = units sold / (units sold + units remaining) x 100**

So if you brought in 100 units and sold 70 of them in 30 days, your 30-day sell-through is 70%. It tells you how quickly a product is moving relative to how much of it you committed to.

## The number most stores get wrong

The mistake is almost always the period. Sell-through means nothing without a clear window and a clear starting quantity.

A product showing 90% sell-through “all time” that you have stocked for two years is not performing. It is barely moving, the figure just looks healthy because the clock has been running forever. The same 90% in 30 days is a different story entirely. Always tie sell-through to a period, and compare products over the same window rather than against each other’s lifetimes.

The second mistake is reading one store-wide number. Sell-through is a per-SKU signal. A blended catalogue figure hides the fast movers you should reorder and the slow ones you should not, which is the entire reason to track it.

## Why high is not always good

It is tempting to treat high sell-through as a pure win, but a product that sold out fast is also a product you may have under-ordered. High sell-through paired with a stockout is lost revenue wearing a success badge. That is why you read it alongside days of supply: high sell-through with healthy cover is strong demand, high sell-through with near-zero stock is a reorder you are already late on.

Low sell-through is the inverse warning: a slow mover, an overstock risk, or a product that is mispriced.

There is no universal target. A fashion brand chasing fresh ranges wants very different numbers from a store selling steady staples. The useful comparison is your own products against each other, over the same period, not an industry figure from a blog.

## How to actually use it

- **Buying.** Strong, fast sell-through is your signal to reorder, and to order more next time. Persistent low sell-through means order less or discontinue.
- **Pricing.** Something selling out almost instantly may be underpriced and leaving margin on the table. Something stuck at low sell-through for months may need a markdown before it becomes dead stock.
- **Together with other metrics.** Read it with ABC class and days of supply, and it goes from a vanity number to a decision.

## How Stockful tracks it

Stockful’s Sell-Through Rate report calculates it per SKU over the window you choose, from your Shopify sales and remaining stock, so you are comparing like with like instead of eyeballing lifetime figures. Sorted across your catalogue, it makes your fast movers and your dead weight obvious at a glance.

Sell-through is simple maths, but only if you anchor it to a period and read it per product. Do that, and it becomes one of the most honest signals about which of your buying decisions actually worked.
